Engelsk sammendrag:
Natural selection on genetic variation is widely accepted as the mechanism that shaped the diversity of life. But how does new variation arise: Is it spontanous and random, or is it directed and influenced by the environment? Investigations during the past thirty years have showed that the machinery of DNA replication and repair do regulate the birth of genetic variations. Thus, environmental conditions cause mutations when they may increase the rate of adaptation. The limitations of such new variation will be discussed, and the lectures will also show how synthetic biology can design and implement artificial genomes, cells, and ecosystems.
